| Despite declaring neutrality in 1914, in
May 1915 Italy joined the war, aligning herself with Britain,
France, Russia, Belgium and Serbia in the fight against
Austro-Hungary, Germany and Turkey. That decision was reached
only after intense diplomatic pressure, and much persuasion by
both sides.
Rather than describe the tortuous process here in detail,
only the key points will be presented. However, visitors
attention is drawn to three English-language books which
provide more information; these are
The Forgotten
Front, the British Army in Italy 1917-1918, by
George Cassar, Isonzo,
The Forgotten Sacrifice of the Great War
, by JR Schindler, The
British Army in Italy 1917-1919, by
John & Eileen Wilks, and the Official History
of the War Military Operations Italy 1915-1919, by JE
Edmonds. None of these provide, nor indeed claim to, provide a
complete account of the labyrinthine negotiations, but do
supply basic information. The BOOKS page below provides
information and links to suppliers.
